3 things to look for in a wedding planner

Hiring a wedding planner is a huge step in the wedding planning process. There are so many potential vendors for hire that it can be hard to know who to select. The wedding planner is unique in that this person shapes both the planning process and the actual day. To make the process of hiring a wedding planner easier, I'm sharing three things you should look for when picking a wedding planner.

  1. Attention to detail.

Weddings are extremely complex events. At the minimum, you have multiple external vendors (anywhere from 5 to 15 for the average wedding), numerous VIPs, different timelines and guidelines for each vendor and VIP, and at least three events (ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception), combined to create the most high stakes event of the couple's life. The wedding may also involve location changes, outfit changes, strict load in/load out rules, and more! Your planner needs to have a keen eye for detail to ensure nothing slips through the cracks.

  2. Flexibility and strong problem solving skills.

Life happens and things go wrong. There will be something that happens on or around your wedding day that your planner will need to problem solve. This could be anything from freak weather to missing decor to a traffic jam. People get sick, accidents happen, and things go wrong. Maybe the caterer misread the menu and didn't notice the pasta option was gluten-free. Maybe there was a power outage in the area and every building in a 5 mile radius is dark. Maybe some of the rental company's chairs were damaged at a prior wedding and now there aren't enough for the ceremony. No matter what happens, your planner needs to be able to pivot and find a feasible solution in a timely manner.

  3. Awareness of their strengths and weaknesses.

Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. Some planners are experts at logistics, but they lack a creative vision. Others are creative designers, but struggle with the operations and logistics pieces. Some are independent operators, others work best as part of a collective. No matter who they are and how they work, everyone has their specific strengths and weaknesses. A great planner is aware of the areas where they excel, and bring in support for the areas where they are not as strong. No one can do it all, but a great planner knows when they can handle a task, and when they need to outsource it to another pro.

Hopefully these tips help you narrow down your options and choose the best planner for your needs. Looking for a great wedding planner to ensure your event's success? Send Greener Unions a message and let's chat!
